And their creative work will be seen by thousands of people – when it is beamed out on the big screen in Millennium Square.
The film, called North Side Story, was made by the members of Northcall Community Centre on Cranmer Bank, Moor Allerton.
The eight-minute masterpiece, funded by a grant from the Big Lottery Fund, stars young mums and kids in the lead roles.
More than 20 residents also took on production roles, including filming, sound engineering and editing.
Project manager Janet Pike said: "The film has been really successful and people have taken it on and run with it. It's really brought people together and they've learned some fantastic skills which they can hopefully use in the future."
North Side Story tells the tale of 12-year-old orphan Liara, played by Jenni Scriven, who is being raised by her big sister Joanne.
Rebellious Liara has dreams of becoming a model, but Joanne cannot afford to buy her any fashion magazines.
So Liara steals a magazine and gets into trouble at school – and the sisters fight before finally resolving their problems.
Joanne is played by young mum Laura Crossland, while Natalie Birkby stars as the narrator and Joanne's neighbour Talia.
Gabrielle Towers played Joanne's friend, while Chantelle Wheatley, 13, also took on several behind-the-scenes roles.
Allerton High pupil Jenni, who played Liara, said: "I think I will be a bit embarrassed when it goes on Millennium Square because in one scene, I'm in my pyjamas. But it was fun being in the film and I really liked it."
Producer Julie Tumilty, of Immedia Productions, said: "We took advice from families about what they'd like to see in the film and the issues which affect their everyday lives.
"It's a fantastic story and hopefully it will encourage other people to do projects in their own community."
The film will be premiered at an all-singing, all-dancing event at Allerton High School, including a flamenco group and majorettes.
It will then be shown on a loop on Millennium Square next month, beaming out to shoppers and workers several times a day.
The premiere is on May 27, from 3pm until 4pm. For tickets, call 0113 268 9993.
