Video: Meet Leeds’s own Star Wars charity heroes

Waiting for Video...

FIVE intrepid fundraisers are hoping the Force will be with them as they tackle a Jane Tomlinson 10K run this weekend.

Husband and wife Rob Shaw and Hayley Tognetti and three of their friends will be taking part in the event dressed as characters from the Star Wars science-fiction films.

Rob, managing director at Leeds-based search marketing firm Epiphany Solutions, will be hitting the streets in Sunday’s Jane Tomlinson Hull 10K as furry giant Chewbacca.

Hayley is competing as Princess Leia while pals Mark Townson, Rob Ellis and Graham Blundell will be dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo and Boba Fett respectively.

And they are banking on the attention generated by their out-of-this-world clobber to help them raise hundreds of pounds for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal.

Rob, whose team is called the ‘Jedi Joggers’, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “We’re all going to be running together so we should stand out from the crowd.

“With luck there won’t be any rain, because my outfit weighs about three stone wet!

“We decided on a Star Wars theme because we thought it would encourage plenty of people to put their hands in their pockets and get behind us.

“We’re also all massive Star Wars geeks – apart from Hayley, anyway.

“This will be her first 10K as well, so she’s really drawn the short straw by having to do it in fancy dress!”

The Hull 10K is one of a number of annual running events held in memory of the late Jane Tomlinson, from Rothwell in Leeds.

Mother-of-three Jane raised more than £2m for charity by tackling marathons and other endurance events after being diagnosed with cancer.

The Jane Tomlinson Appeal supports a range of children’s and cancer charities, including Martin House Hospice, near Wetherby.
