VIDEO: Massive school blaze at Pontefract

MORE than 160 firefighters were called to battle a huge blaze at a West Yorkshire school at the weekend.

The fire broke out at Carleton High, Pontefract, some time between 2.30am and 3am.

Eight fire engines were first called to the incident, and crews used the aerial ladder and large water jets to fight the fire - the cause of which is now under investigation.

As the morning went on, extra crews were called to the incident, with numbers there rising from 12, to 20 at 4am and then 25 by 5.30am.

A West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman said: "The school was well ablaze."

He said that at the height of the fire 160 firefighters plus officers were at the scene of the specialist science college in Green Lane, which is home to 1,000 pupils.

No one was in the building at the time and there were no reported injuries, he said.
