VIDEO: Leeds weightlifter is a record breaker

SUPER fit Andy Silverman is hoping for a place in the Guinness Book of World Records after lifting a 20kg barbell over his head 1,769 times in one hour.

The 37-year-old, known as the 'Mighty Silver Fox' by his mates, set himself the challenge of 1,200 lifts but passed his goal after only 40 minutes, and went on to complete almost 600 more lifts.

Encouraged by cheers from his friends, he took short breaks between sets of ten lifts to refresh himself and wipe sweat from the bar.

Andy – who works as a personal trainer at Fitness First gym on Kirstall Road, Leeds – continued straight through the hour without slowing, and only in the final minute did his legs begin to shake.

Afterwards he said: "I'm gobsmacked really. I have been training really really hard. You can do as much training as you want, but you never know until the day. I'm well pleased."

"It meant a big help for my friends being there," he added.

It will take six to eight weeks for the Guinness Book of World Records to officially recognise his accomplishment, and set it as a new world record.

This is not the first challenge Andy has set himself.

He previously rowed the equivalent of 100,000 metres on a stationary rowing machine in six hours and 40 minutes, and recently finished a 100 mile bicycle ride through Yorkshire in seven hours.

Next, Andy hopes to set a new record on the stationary bicycle by pedalling the equivalent of 100 miles in six hours.

To anyone else thinking of making a record attempt, Andy said: "Anybody can have a go. If you have got a dream then follow your dream. Work hard. If you want to go for some type of record, just try your best.

"Even if you don't get the record, set yourself a personal challenge like mine. If you can get through that, that's just great."
