Video: Historic Temple Newsam's Halloween invitation to tour White Lady's old haunts

Her tortured soul is reputed to have roamed the corridors of Temple Newsam House for nearly 500 years. And it seems the ghost of Lady Jane Dudley has no intention of abandoning her historic home. Click here for full story and video.

A spooky figure matching her description has recently been spotted at Temple Newsam, said by some to be the most haunted house in England.

But faint-hearted Yorkshire Evening Post readers who are suddenly considering giving the Jacobean mansion a wide berth should perhaps think again.

The White Lady in our picture is in fact heavily-disguised Temple Newsam visitor assistant Vanessa Schrompf.

She got dressed up to help promote a series of guided ghost walks taking place in and around the house to mark Halloween.

Vanessa was joined by the estate's education officer Julia Wynne Thorpe and Leeds City Council leisure chief Councillor John Procter, playing two of the supernatural monks who are rumoured to prowl Temple Newsam.

One is normally referred to as the Hissing Monk, on account of the sound which filled the ears of a woman who claims to have seen him near an old Tudor door on the south side of the house in 1980.

The other, dubbed the Lawn Monk, has been the subject of numerous sightings running from Temple Newsam to the local golf course – without leaving any footprints in his wake.

Lady Jane Dudley, meanwhile, hanged herself in a fit of lovesick grief after learning that Lord Darnley – born in the house in 1545 – had become engaged to Mary Queen of Scots.

Talking about Temple Newsam's reputation as a paranormal hot spot, education officer Julia said: "People often ask me if I believe in ghosts.

"I tell them I have no option, because I've seen plenty while I've been working here!"

The Halloween tours are on October 26, 27 and 28. Spaces are limited but can be booked in advance by ringing (0113) 2645535.
