A DAZZLING display of more than 40,000 festive lights at a West Yorkshire couple’s home is set to boost a hospice’s fundraising efforts.

Jon and Jennifer Sharpe’s illuminated house and garden in North Featherstone near Pontefract draws hundreds of visitors from across Yorkshire each festive season.

And it has helped raise more than £8,000 in donations for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice in the last five years.

Semi-retired electrical engineer Mr Sharpe, 71, spent three weeks setting up this year’s display.

The house, trees, driveway, and pond all twinkle into life alongside animated and illuminated reindeer and penguins among other festive characters.

Mr Sharpe said: “I started putting up a few Christmas lights about 20 years ago, but after we started to holiday in the States, they got bigger and better.”

Last year Mr Sharpe told the public that he would be scaling down the lights as he got older.

However, he has now added to the collection.

He has bought ‘Son et Lumière’ equipment – made by the same company who produce the light shows at Disney World – to run a sound and lights display.

Jennifer Sharpe, 64, said: “When the local bus service started to stop at the bottom of our drive and turn the internal lights off to allow passengers a few moments to admire the lights before carrying on their journey, we knew it was attracting lots of attention.

“Since then the lights have been put up in aid of the Prince of Wales Hospice and a donation box will be located on the driveway.”

The Christmas lights will be on at the couple’s every night from 5pm to 10pm until January 1.

The ‘Son et Lumière’ light shows will start on Tuesday
and Wednesday next week and will be turned on every 30 minutes.

Santa will be making special appearances at the house throughout the festive season. The illuminated house is at 7 Dales, Featherstone Lane, North Featherstone, Pontefract, WF7 6AH.
