Video: Burglar caught on neighbour’s crime camera

Waiting for Video...

Bungling Kyle Ruddock stumbled straight into a trap when he broke into a neighbour’s house.

Ruddock was caught on covert police cameras when he smashed into a house just yards from his own home.

The 22-year-old broke into the property on Tarnside Drive, Seacroft, Leeds in June last year. The home had been set up as a police “capture house” to catch criminals.

Ruddock found nothing to steal but has wound up with a 150 hour community service order and a 12-month supervision order when he pleaded guilty to burglary at Leeds Magistrates’ Court.

Ruddock, who lives on the same street, got into the property by forcing metallic shutters that covered a rear entrance to the kitchen.

Footage from the cameras in the capture house showed Ruddock clearly trying to avoid leaving his finger prints by covering his hand and pulling down the sleeve of his jacket as he moved around the inside of the semi-detached house.

Police capture houses feature tiny hidden cameras that produce high quality footage and equipment that sprays intruders with invisible dye.

Det Insp Philip Jackson, from North East Leeds CID, said: “This conviction clearly demonstrates the success our use of capture houses is continuing to have in catching burglars.

“The technology we employ provides irrefutable evidence meaning offenders usually have no choice but to admit the offence when they appear at court.

“Burglars like Kyle Ruddock think nothing of spreading misery within their own community and preying on the property and possessions of those living a short distance from their own doorstep. Burglary remains one of our top priorities and the use of capture houses, alongside a range of other tactics, is helping us to reduce the level of burglary.

“We will continue to set up capture houses across Leeds as part of our ongoing efforts to catch burglars and reduce this type of crime.”
