Vicar urges vigilance after lead thefts
A West Yorkshire vicar has urged people to be vigilant after lead thefts from churches and schools.
Towns targeted include Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Silsden, Skipton, Gargrave and Guiseley.
In Ilkley thieves caused thousands of pounds of damage at St Margaret's Church when they ripped sheet lead from the roof.
They also struck at Ghyll Royd School in neighbouring Burley-in-Wharfedale. Meanwhile, raids on churches in Guiseley and Gargrave have left costs of over 30,000.
The Vicar of St Margaret's has joined police in urging residents to be alert, especially for suspicious-looking vehicles.
Canon Philip Gray, who has written to Ilkley residents and parishioners, descibed the theft as a "sorry reflection on the morality of some members of our society".
The church is installing increased security, including an alarm and a chemical lead marking technique which makes stolen lead extremely difficult to sell.
