Nathan McCarthy, one of five Mirfield jailed for their part in a series of robberies

Five men have been jailed for terrorising a West Yorkshire neighbourhood in a series of robberies and an affray.

Jordan Watkinson, Liam McCarthy, Nathan McCarthy, Jamie Evans and Bryan Laffey were all sentenced at Leeds Crown Court yesterday after being found guilty a trial held in July.

The offences took place on the London Park estate in Mirfield over the Christmas and New Year period.

Jordan Watkinson received three years for attempted robbery and two for affray. Liam McCarthy was given four years for attempted robbery and affray.

Nathan McCarthy was sentenced to six years for robbery and six months for drugs offences.

Jamie Evans received three and a half years for robbery.

Bryan Laffey was sentenced for six months for attempted robbery and 12 months for robbery.

Nathan and Liam McCarthy will also be subject to five-year antisocial behaviour orders which will ban the pair from entering the London Park estate.

In November and December last year and January this year, the group targeted a flat on Eastway Park and threatened the people inside.

On January 13 this year Nathan McCarthy, Evans and Laffey robbed three people in the flat.

An investigation was launched by Dewsbury CID and the Dewsbury and Mirfield Neighbourhood Policing Team which led to the group being arrested.

Det Con Adrian Lever, who led the investigation. said: “This group believed that they ‘ran’ the London Park estate, that they were untouchable and could commit crimes against people living on the estate as and when they pleased.

“The sentences they have received today clearly show that no-one is above the law.”

Coun Jean Calvert, Kirklees Cabinet member for safer, stronger communities, said: “This is a great result for the residents of London Park.

“We hope this result gives people the confidence to take a stand against crime and antisocial behaviour.
