United's supporters rally round Radebe after cancer shock

By Katie Baldwin LEEDS United fans have sent a message of support to legendary player Lucas Radebe after his announcement that his wife has cancer.

As reported in later editions of the YEP yesterday, the 36-year-old announced in a video message to reporters in his native South Africa that his wife Feziwe had been diagnosed with bowel cancer.

She is currently being treated in Leeds and Lucas has postponed some of his planned testimonial events until later in the year.

Leeds United Supporters Club chairman Ray Fell said all the club's fans were thinking of the couple.

"Our thoughts are with him and his wife and hopefully she will get well soon," he said.

"Obviously we are sorry to hear the news, particularly as he is at the stage when he has just left the game and they should be able to enjoy their time together.

"It's a time when they both should be looking forward and a time when they both will feel it most."

The former Leeds captain was due to attend the launch of his testimonial year in South Africa but instead stayed in Leeds to be with his wife.

He said in the message: "Just this week my wife Fezi has been diagnosed with, and is receiving treatment for, bowel cancer.

Treatment

"As you know cancer is a serious illness, so her doctors are not taking any chances and I am confident she is receiving the best possible treatment.

"I am sure you understand that at a difficult time like this she needs my support."

His scheduled testimonial match on June 11 in Durban will go ahead, with him attending, but he said the rest of the events would be postponed until he was able to leave his wife for longer periods.

The player also announced he was setting up a trust in Fezi's name to raise funds for cancer treatment in South Africa.

"It is a disease that can be beaten with the correct treatment. But the treatment costs money and some of our public hospitals are struggling."
