Ultimate Frisbee: Leeds teacher is champion

It's not often your religious studies teacher doubles up as a international athlete but that's the deal at one Leeds school.

Pupils at Fulneck School, Pudsey, are getting to grips with Ultimate Frisbee – and they're learning from one of the best in the game.

Lindsay Wilkinson plays for the Leeds women's team – LeedsLeedsLeeds – which came second in the European Championships last year – and is team manager for the GB Junior Women's squad, which is competing in the World Junior Ultimate Championships in Germany this summer.

Assuming she is picked for the Leeds team again, she will be playing in

the World Championships this summer in Prague and could also be competing in an international tournament in Boston.

Now she's turning her attention to promising players closer to home, training sixth-formers in the skills and ethics of the self-refereed sport – which she believes is a key factor in attracting players to the game.

She said: "We rely on something called 'the spirit of the game'. The idea is that the players have to be honest. If we foul another player, we have to admit to it

"And it's all about players resolving issues them- selves, in the way they think is most fair."

Ultimate Frisbee is played by two teams of seven on a field similar to an American Football pitch.

Games usually last 90 minutes and the winning team is first to reach a previously decided number of goals, typically 15 or 17.

Lindsay, 27, took up Ultimate while studying philosophy at Durham University and played on the mixed first team there as well as the women's team. She has been coaching the junior girls squad since 2007.
