FIRE ATTACK: Police say the Desi Grilled takeaway was broken into, then set on fire.

Arsonists torched a takeaway while two people slept upstairs.

Police are investigating the blaze at Desi Grilled on Doncaster Road, Wakefield, as “arson with intent to endanger life”.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said it was believed that the curry takeaway was broken into and set on fire.

The blaze in a terrace block was spotted and the alarm was raised at just before 1.30am yesterday.

The occupants of the flat managed to escape but suffered smoke inhalation and needed oxygen treatment.

Firefighters from Wakefield fire station attended and dealt with the blaze.

One member of the fire crew said: “There was no-one in the takeaway itself but two people were evacuated from flats above the takeaway. They had inhaled smoke.”

The blaze was brought under control.

West Yorkshire Fire Service the cause of fire was suspected to be “deliberate ignition”.

A police spokeswoman said: “We are looking at a crime of arson with attempt to endanger life.

“We were called by the fire service at 1.33 am to reports of a suspected deliberate ignition.

“The building was on fire when we attended but all the tenants were out and safe.

“It looks like the property has been broken into from the rear.”

Yesterday steel shutters on the front of the takeaway were drawn down apart from one, which was partially open, on the front door.

A smell of smoke was still thick along the parade of shops, which includes a number of other takeaways, and a window on the upstairs flat was open.

Members of the fire service were still in the area carrying out enquiries.

Any witnesses or anyone with any information should contact Wakefield police on 101.
