The future of a notorious Leeds pub is again in doubt, months after its licence was reinstated.
Leeds City Council’s Licensing Committee revoked the Slip Inn’s licence in March after a review requested by Morley Neighbourhood Policing Team.
After the Morley pub’s owners asked to negotiate the decision with the committee, the licence was reissued after they agreed to strict conditions aimed at stemming reports of everything from brawls to flouting of the smoking ban.
But alleged drug use, fighting and theft on the premises have led to local police asking for the council’s Licensing Committee to review the Albion Street pub’s licence yet again.
Coun Shirley Varley (Morley Borough Independents, Morley South) said: “The management at the Slip Inn have been given every opportunity to eradicate this anti-social behaviour and have failed to do so.
“We fully support the police’s request to have the licence withdrawn.”
A decision on whether the licence should be revoked again will happen the week commencing January 21.
In a bid to stay open the pub’s owners had agreed to having suitable CCTV in operation, a supervisor in the public area of the bar between 5pm to closing every Friday and Saturday, asking for proof of age from anyone appearing to be under 25, and stopping bottles and glasses being taken from the premises.
Coun Robert Finnigan (MBI, Morley North) said: “Closure seems to be the only option to resolving these problems permanently.”
Stating unsavoury incidents are still happening frequently at the pub, Coun Neil Dawson (Lab, Morley South) said: “This situation creates a negative image of the town centre.”
A spokeswoman for the council said anyone wishing to make a representation about the Slip Inn should email entertainment.licensing@leeds.gov.uk before January 4.
The YEP tried to contact the Slip Inn but no-one was available for comment.
