A heartbroken family have paid tribute to a much-loved mum who sadly lost her brave battle with cancer.

Kelly Durkin, 37, who was diagnosed with cancer of the cervix and pelvis last year, died with her husband Michael and parents, Ann and Dave Sharrock, by her bedside at St James’ Hospital on Monday.

The mother-of-two underwent gruelling treatment and her family raised thousands of pounds to help her win her courageous battle.

Kind-hearted Kelly, from East Keswick, near Wetherby, created two special memory boxes for her two young sons Connor, 11, and Ryan, 14, before her death.

They now treasure the special teddy bear and silver necklace, which is engraved with their mother’s fingerprint.

Paying tribute to their mum’s bravery they said: “Thank you for being a good mum and we love you very much.

“We have always loved you from the moment you bought us into this world and hope that you are safe in heaven.

“We will always love you and you will still be with us forever and ever.”

Devoted husband Michael, who was married to Kelly for 13 years, added: “My darling Kelly I hope you hear every prayer I say every morning, noon and night that you are safe in God’s arms.

“I loved you from the first time I saw you all those years ago and my love for you has grown stronger every day.”

Niece Danielle McDermott praised her aunt’s bravery and said on behalf of the family: “She had been so very brave in fighting her battle.

“We have told the boys their mum will always be with them and she will never leave their side. They are a credit to her and we as a family will make sure they achieve their dreams.

“We want to keep her memory alive and the family were all absolutely amazed with how she dealt with it. She never complained and fought so hard.”

Requiem mass will be celebrated at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Wetherby, on Monday at 11am.
