Tribute to Dewsbury death crash soldier

THE Army has paid tribute to a Dewsbury soldier killed in a car accident at the weekend.

Paul Atkinson, pictured above, a Rifleman from the 3rd Battalion The Rifles, based in Edinburgh, was on his way home to Dewsbury for the weekend when his blue Peugeot 306 hatchback left the A1 southbound carriageway and hit a tree near Leeming in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

His former platoon commander, Captain Simon Clark, said: "Paul was a dedicated, professional soldier with a bright future ahead of him.

"He was well liked and respected among his colleagues and will be sadly missed.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

The collision occurred at around 6.45am, half a mile north of the junction with the A684 at Leeming Bar.
