Tree-mendous effort at Temple Newsam

It was a tree-mendous turn out at Temple Newsam Park. Click here to find out why.

More than 200 green-minded runners set off on the city's first 5K Tree-athlon to help fund the planting of trees in the UK and abroad.

The Trees for Cities event was held at Temple Newsham Park from midday yesterday and was the first of its kind outside of London.

Leeds City Council pledged to match the total raised.

Each runner had a 'tree wish' printed on the back of their race shirt in support of the campaign.

Race winner was Richard Joyce, 22, who lives in Headingley, Leeds.

On completion of the course all eventers were invited to a free massage, and to take part in a fashion swap to encourage recycling.

All left over clothes will be donated to charity.

Enjoying the clothes swap was Kathryn Cooper, who lives in Menston, Leeds.

The 27-year-old artist said: "I don't exercise and thought it was going to be really scary and competitive but it was a great event."

Face painting and balloon sculpting help to keep children entertained.

Plans are afoot to make the Tree-Athlon an annual event.

Graham Simmonds, Trees for Cities' chief executive, said: "The Tree-Athlon is great way for people to do their bit for the environment whilst getting fit and having fun - and the funds raised will enable

Trees for Cities to get lots more trees planted from parks in Leeds to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia."

Also supporting the event was Festival Republic, previously Mean Fiddler, organisers of the Leeds Carling Festival.
