The treasurer of Leeds United Disabled Organisation has been arrested by police on suspicion of theft.

A question mark is hanging over the organisation's future because of a lack of cash and unpaid bills.

Stuart Ramm, LUDO's founder chairman who recently returned to the role following the death of Baroness Nicky Chapman last September, said he was devastated.

He said two cheques, totalling 4,200 – for a recent memorial to Baroness Chapman and a members presentation evening which had made a 500 loss – had bounced.

Mr Ramm said he understood just 900 was left in the organisation's bank account. It's feared the missing amount is about 4,000.

Mr Ramm said that unless alternative funding – possibly from new sponsors – was found, the work of the organisation in assisting disabled Leeds United fans to support their team could be in doubt.

Since the organisation's formation in 1992, facilities and opportunities for disabled people at the Elland Road ground have been greatly extended, said Mr Ramm.

Originally there were only 23 wheelchair places at the ground and today there are 180 wheelchair locations and facililities.

Mr Ramm, who is also a former treasurer, said: "Our organisation has been going 18 years and meant so much to Nicky and I. We called it our baby. If we cannot find sponsors then we could be finished."

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: "A 54-year-old man from Castleford has been arrested on suspicion of theft in connection with an on-going investigation into the theft of cash from the Leeds United Disabled Organisation.

"The man has been interviewed by officers and released on police bail pending further inquiries."
