Thumbs-up for Leeds care home after clean-up

A Leeds care home which was issued with a formal warning by a watchdog has now been given the thumbs-up after bosses brought in extra staff and improved standards.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) had issued the caution to Corinthian House, in Upper Wortley, in December after finding shortcomings in its staffing and attention to residents’ dignity.

But after bosses responded to the call for urgent improvements, the home in Green Hill Lane has now had a turnaround. Following a second visit from inspectors, the warning notice from independent regulator CQC has been removed.

Area manager Martin Hawes said: “The issues raised by CQC were dealt with immediately following their visit by ensuring that staffing levels were increased. We have also coupled this with extra dignity and care training for all the care staff. Our ongoing refurbishment program has also continued to improve the environment of the home.”

He said a survey of residents and relatives had seen “very positive” feedback, and most had not recognised the picture of the home painted by the original report.

Mr Hawes added: “We have responded to all the criticisms made and have worked positively with CQC and Leeds council.

“I believe that all staff have now embraced the changes and these are being reinforced by regular staff meetings and ongoing training.

“Corinthian will also have all the support that it needs from senior management to make sure that these changes are maintained.

“This has been a very difficult time for the home but the manager and staff have worked hard to resolve all the issues and we would like to thank them for their efforts over this period.”

The original warning notice followed an unannounced inspectors’ visit in December, which had demanded action by the end of 2011.

After their second visit, inspectors said in their draft “outcome” report that Corinthian House was “clean and tidy” and had a “nice atmosphere”, that “people living in the home looked smart and well cared for” and residents they spoke to “all told us that improvements have been made at the home and felt that staff were respectful in their approach”.
