Thug is jailed for racist attacks

A THUG has been jailed for 12 months after launching a second racist attack on taxi drivers in Leeds.

Timothy Payne subjected an Iraqi national taxi driver to a 10-minute assault, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Payne, 28, of Sissons Road, Middleton, had got in the taxi in Leeds and asked to be taken to an address in Morley on August 8.

But when the cab arrived Payne got out and hurled racist abuse at the driver and started punching him. Payne had admitted racially aggravated assault by beating.

In June 2007, Payne racially abused and punched a taxi driver in the face at a taxi rank in Leeds city centre.

He escaped jail and was handed a community punishment order for racially aggravated common assault.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC jailed Payne for eight months for the latest attack with four months consecutive for the earlier incident.

He told Payne: "This was a sustained attack, I have no doubt it was a very frightening experience and taxi drivers are vulnerable."
