Thomas Cook: Leeds stores among travel firm’s closure list

l

l

Travel firm Thomas Cook has revealed which stores in Yorkshire it proposes to close as part of cull of 195 travel agencies nationwide.

The company wants to close 29 Thomas Cook or Co-operative Travel stores in the Yorkshire area which is expected to lead to 151 job losses.

The list includes Thomas Cook stores in Moortown; Seacroft Green; Crossgates shopping centre; Batley; and in Sainsbury’s, Harrogate.

Co-operative Travel stores on the closure list include Carlton Street, Castleford; Horbury, Wakefield; Ilkley Station; Main Street, Garforth; Heckmondwike; Lowtown, Pudsey and Cliffe Court, Yeadon.

There are currently 102 Thomas Cook and Co-operative Travel stores across Yorkshire. The closure plans are expected to reduce the number to 73.

Nationally, the job losses announced last week amount to 2,500.

A company spokeswoman said stores were chosen for closure either because they were under performing, because another store was in close proximity or because a shop lease was due to expire.

She said the majority of the 29 in Yorkshire were not meeting targets and almost half have another alternative store in the same town.
