Thief plundered account of Leeds student who forgot to take card from machine

CASH SWOOP: Police want to question this man over a 200 withdrawal from a cash machine.

CASH SWOOP: Police want to question this man over a 200 withdrawal from a cash machine.

Police want to find this man after a student’s cash was withdrawn and stolen from a cash machine at Leeds railway station.

British Transport Police (BTP) released the CCTV image after the incident on Sunday, February 17.

The victim, a 20-year-old woman student from Suffolk but studying in Leeds, was using a cash machine at about 5.30pm on February 17.

But she then forgot to take her card and walked away.

PC Sam Bloomfield, the investigating officer, said: “A man, who had been standing behind the victim in the queue for the cash point, withdrew £200 from her bank account and left with the card and cash.

“We would appeal for anyone who may recognise the man pictured or know his current whereabouts to contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP on 0800 405040 quoting background reference B8/NEA of February 27, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Officers have urged cash machine users to conceal their PIN number, and to be aware of people watching.

PC Bloomfield added: “Report confiscated cards immediately. If you can, don’t leave the machine. Instead, call the bank from the machine or ATM using a mobile phone.

“Never rely on the help of strangers to retrieve a confiscated card.”
