GLADIATORS and a bright orange Oompah Loompa were some of the stars of this year's 5k Student Run.

The event, in the grounds of Leeds Metropolitan University's Headingley campus on Saturday, attracted about 1,500 runners who soaked up the carnival atmosphere.

The winner of the men's race was Rory Fraser, who finished way ahead of the rest of the field in 15 minutes 24 seconds. Second place was James Douglas in 16.15 followed by David Lipscomb in 16.31.

Sarah Tunstall was the first woman home in 17.45, followed by Emma Clayton (18.37) and Hollie Walker (18.50).

In the 1.25k mini marathon, first place was claimed by Dominic Owens, followed by Patrick Franklin and Chris Gray. The fancy dress prize went to Leeds Met staff member Beth Hallam. The team challenge was won by Yorkshire Bank.

Among those lined up to take part in the event were former Leeds Rhino Barrie McDermott, rugby union sevens player Waisale Serevi and former Olympic games athlete John Maycock.

The race, now in its third year, was officially started by the university's Chancellor, former Olympian Brendan Foster.

Runners who completed the course were given a ticket to see Leeds Carnegie's final game in the rugby union Premiership at Headingley stadium.
