The Bloke
REMEMBER that Stephen King book Christine? It was about a possessed car that wanted to take over its owner's soul.
Now my car may have been summoned from the depths of Northamptonshire rather than the depths of hell, but I'm all but certain that, just like Christine, it wants possession of my soul. And if it can't get that, it'll settle for my wallet.
It started innocently enough: a misfiring catalytic convertor that seemed to have been fixed under the dealer's warranty, only to go again a couple of months after it elapsed necessitating a costly repair.
The exhaust had to be replaced at least twice. Then the radiator sprung a leak.
One weekend I left it at my mate's house when we went off golfing and returned to find water sloshing around in the footwells.
Apparently leaf debris had clogged the seals of the electric sunroof, causing them to fail. On the wettest weekend of the year.
The cam belt snapped a couple of days before it was due to go in for the service that would have replaced it. That cost me nearly 2,000 out of my wedding fund.
Then the mechanism for the driver's side electric window died a death and had to be replaced.
All of this led a colleague at work to liken it to one of those clown's cars that comes to a stop only for the sides to fall down and the wheels fly off.
On Saturday night, as I was driving the Missus and my sister to the cinema, the passenger side window went as well.
So it's all set for another trip to the garage (provided it can make it that far without spontaneously combusting), and my bank account is bracing itself for another hit.
Thank goodness not everything in life is as reliable as a Volkswagen.
But how do I know my demonic car is most definitely a she?
We were on our way, at my behest, to see action thriller Inception at the cinema when the window went.
It meant we had to come home and, outvoted by the women, watch slushy rom-com Valentine's Day on Sky Box Office.
Which I paid for, naturally.
