The page turns as Leeds library given a bright future

As libraries across Leeds face cuts and closure, one of them, at Whinmoor, is planning a bright new future.

Councillors joined council staff and residents this week for a sneak preview of a new joint approach to deliver services in the area.

Leeds library service has teamed up with a children’s centre to deliver the Whinmoor Library Partnership, combining the traditional library service along with some family services formerly provided by the nearby Swarcliffe Children’s Centre such as a toddlers’ crèche.

Councillor Peter Gruen and Pauleen Grahame (Lab, Crossgates & Whinmoor) joined staff from the library service and residents to launch the new facility.

The library will act as a base for a range of activities and events for parents, children and carers, story times for young children and computer sessions for people who want to improve their skills or write CVs.

The new partnership is the result of the council’s consultations earlier this year on how to best utilise library facilities.

Coun Gruen, who chairs Whinmoor Community Forum, said: “Whinmoor Library is a really fantastic local facility and it is important that we make the most out of what it has to offer in order to ensure that it is used by as many people as possible.

“Council staff from the Library Service and Swarcliffe Children’s Centre have worked really hard along with local service users to put this proposal together which shows just how much these facilities are valued in the community.

“It makes sense to combine certain council services in order to get the most out of them.”
