The Bloke: A true mum doesn't take a day off from being a mum

I love my mum.

That's nice, I hear you say, but shouldn't you have told her that on Sunday, it being Mother's Day and everything?

Of course I told her, you fool. What do you take me for?

Let's see. I told her on Sunday morning, when she said she didn't mind in the slightest that me and my dad were heading off to have a round of golf.

And I told her again when we got back and found her cooking a cracking roast dinner with all the trimmings.

And I'm pretty sure I told her for a third time straight after lunch when she let me and my dad rest up in front of the rugby as we let our food go down.

I think the flowers and gift-wrapped azalea shrub I handed over helped, as did the Mother's Day card which, as always, I made sure was bigger than the one my sister gave her.

But then my mum's never been a big one for Mother's Day.

Sure, she was a little on the grumpy side the year I completely forgot.

And there was that time when I got the date wrong and tried to present her with a box of chocolates in the middle of January. But even then she just laughed and let me eat them myself.

You see, a true mum doesn't take a day off from being a mum.

All that stuff about being pampered for the day is anathema to a mum like mine, whose unwavering commitment to the job means it's children's day every day of the year. Even when the card shops say it's Mother's Day.

Should I feel guilty about any of this?

Of course not. I know that Sunday was exactly the Mother's Day my mum wanted. Golf, roast, rugby and all.

Did I mention that I love her?
