Ten arrested in Wakefield fraud swoops

POLICE mounted a series of early morning swoops to arrest ten people today in Wakefield as part of a fraud and money laundering investigation.

Nine men and a woman were arrested and cash and other items seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

Police raided properties and businesses in Agbrigg and Sandal in Wakefield this morning.

Nine people were arrested in Agbrigg and a man was arrested in Sandal .

They are being questioned by detectives at Wood Street police station.

Police searched the properties including businesses premises and homes and enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Inspector Paul O'Dowd, of Wakefield District Police, said: "These people have been arrested in relation to a money laundering investigation. Wakefield District Police have invested money to set up a financial investigation unit to deal with this type of investigation which involves criminal property being converted into cash and made to appear legitimate.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who appears to be involved in crime and living a lifestyle which is clearly beyond their means.

Those convicted of money laundering and fraud risk having their homes, vehicles and other possessions confiscated.

Any money raised through these seizures is then used by West Yorkshire Police to fund further POCA investigations or ploughed back into the local community.

Anyone with information about criminals in their community should ring Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
