Temple Newsam House: Students re-enact the past through drama
Visitors at Temple Newsam were entertained by drama students who performed costumed historical re-enactments as part of their degree course.
The Foundation Degree Theatre Studies students from Park Lane College Leeds researched the history of the Temple Newsam estate to create inventive dramatic re-enactments of the lives of the Meynell Ingram family.
Students were inspired by the life of the Meynell Ingram family, their servants, maids and gardeners, and in particular, the visit of the Prince of Wales to Temple Newsam in 1806.
On the visit, the Prince of Wales presented his friend - Lady Hertford – with Chinese wallpaper and the Moses tapestries. Lady Hertford controversially cut out a book of birds and pasted pictures to the very important and very expensive wallpaper!
Each performance brought the characters to life using scripts written by the students, and performed in full historic costume. Students studying Production Arts at the College have also provided the hair and make-up designs for the performers.
Vivienne Razavilar, Head of the Creative Arts Academy at PLCL said: "All of the students involved have worked really hard on this project as part of their work-based learning, researching the characters in depth and writing their own scripts.
"I am thrilled that we have had the opportunity to engage these students in what is becoming a very popular form of theatre i.e. bringing history to life. Many historical houses and museums are adopting this form of theatre to entertain and educate visitors."
