The workshop offered visitors the chance to drop in and see how the great furniture masters worked with wood to make the beautiful furniture on display at Temple Newsam, and put together a Chippendale chair themselves.

There was also Valentine's Card making where visitors were urged to get creative after being inspired by the current exhibition of textiles and rich damasks to make their own card for that special person in your life.

Councillor William Hyde, lead member for leisure, said the worshop provided a fantastic opportunity to learn historic crafts and hear some incredibly romantic stories from Temple Newsam's history.

Temple Newsam has been the home to many love stories over its long history. Some courtships have faded or been lost as time has gone by but there are those that have proved their longevity through the careful concealment of letters and diaries.

Guides in the costumes of Isabella, 3rd Viscountess of Irwin (1670 -1764) and other ladies of the house will recount their romantic stories.

One story that will be heard is that of Arthur, 3rd Viscount Irwin whose unrelenting efforts to woo Isabella, a wealthy heiress from Sussex, involved bribing her servants to plead for him and smuggle love letters to her, always addressed to 'My dear Pretty Penny.' Arthur and Isabella soon fell in love, and became lord and lady of the estate.
