Tears of sadness and joy as sun shines

There were tears of sadness and joy, as thousands of women took part in Race for Life at Temple Newsam Park over the weekend. Watch our extensive picture slideshow here. Are you or your loved ones featured?

Around 10,000 women took part in the three 5km races each running for a special reason.

An expected 820,00 is expected to be raised for Cancer Research UK, from these races alone. Many more are taking place across the UK.

The re-scheduled races, one on Saturday and two on Sunday, had been postponed from June 30 and July 1, because of flooding.

The sun finally shone for what seemed like the first time in weeks. Names of people who have survived and lost their fight against cancer were proudly written on the entry numbers of participants.

Mum of two Michelle Jordan, from Whinmoor, was wearing the leggins and bright make-up and jewcoveted Number 1 vest, after telling her story to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Michelle, who was being supported in Saturday's 4pm race by her parents, fianc Dave Jordan and children Ellie and Ruby, was running to raise awareness about cancer and because her mum Sandra is fighting bladder cancer and her gran Sylvia, has lung cancer.

Gym manager Michelle said: "It is a great positive atmosphere. I have trained hard. Everyone seems to know someone who has had or is suffering with cancer, that is why I decided to take part."

Nicola Staples, from Cancer Research UK, said: "The weather has been tremendous for us all weekend. For those who could not make the, we would urge that if your sponsors are happy, to still collect some or all of the money.

"We want to thank everyone for the brilliant effort they have made."
