A tanning salon member who finished his sunbed session before sneaking back in to the cubicle to spy on a half-naked woman has been sentenced to a community order.

Father-of-two Craig Moorhouse, 29, crouched behind the sunbed at Kwik Tan in Castleford before the unsuspecting woman walked in and undressed to her knickers, Wakefield Magistrates Court heard.

Moorhouse, of Hulme Square, Castleford, peeked through an eight-inch gap after the woman laid on the sunbed and pulled down the lid.

She had been on the sunbed for around four minutes when she heard the cubicle door open during the incident in August this year.

The concerned woman spoke to the salon’s management, who reviewed CCTV footage which showed Moorhouse walking in to the cubicle before the woman had gone in.

Moorhouse, who admitted voyeurism, told police he wasn’t looking for sexual gratification when he committed the offence and didn’t care if a man or a woman had walked in the cubicle.

The woman told police: “I just can’t get it out of my head that another person has seen my body without my consent. I feel horrible and fat and look at myself thinking I’m really ugly.”

Michael Walsh, mitigating, said the incident had led to the breakdown of Moorhouse’s relationship with his partner, the mother of his two children.

Sentencing Moorhouse to a six-month community order, deputy district judge Tim Spruce told him: “I cannot for a minute imagine what must have possessed you.

Clearly this is out of character.”

Judge Spruce added: “What we can’t forget here is the impact on the victim, the girl in the tanning shop, who is now scared to go out in public and to interact in a way other people take for granted.”

Moorhouse must pay the woman a total of £300 compensation and £45 towards prosecution costs.
