Leeds Crown Court heard the gun, loaded with four live bullets, was discovered in a laptop bag in a rear passenger footwell.

Randon's three-year-old son was in a seat in the rear of the car.

Police also discovered a machete in the car boot.

Randon, 28, of Smeaton Grove, Swillington, claimed he was keeping the gun for someone else and did not want to leave it in the house.

Jailing him for seven years, Judge Kerry Macgill said that was a "cock and bull story".

Judge Macgill told Randon: "An Uzi sub-machine gun is about as lethal a weapon as you can find. It's a murderous weapon, that is its mission – to kill and kill effectively. It will spray out bullets."

Prosecutor Richard Walters said police followed the car at around 3.30pm on March 17 after it was flagged up on their number plate recognition system as being connected to firearms.

Mr Walters said when police found the gun Randon told them: "It's nowt to do with her, it's mine."

Randon's girlfriend said within earshot of police: "Tell them Dave gave it to you."

Randon's lawyer Ian Alexander said: "He is quite relieved (the gun] was seized by police before anything happened with it."

Randon had admitted possessing a prohibited weapon and an offensive weapon. He also pleaded guilty to possessing ammunition.

Randon has four previous convictions for possessing offensive weapons, mainly knives.
