Cool-headed school pupils have scooped a major prize after pitching their ideas for a new ice cream flavour that could be sold nationwide.

Youngsters from Cockburn High School, in Belle Isle, Crawshaw School, in Pudsey, and Ralph Thoresby High School, in Holt Park, gave Dragon’s Den-style presentations to Asda executives yesterday.

The pupils, aged 13 to 15, were competing at Asda House, in Leeds, for the chance to have their own unique flavour manufactured and sold in stores as part of the firm’s Loaded range.

If the winning Crawshaw students’ orange infusion flavoured dessert comes through an Asda ‘chosen by you’ panel, the pupils’ tasty treat could hit the shelves in September.

Helen Stockdale, design & technology leader at Crawshaw, said: “I’m so proud of the girl’s efforts today, from producing the product to pitching they’ve been amazing.

“We actually had three teams that competed in a heat to pitch today – so the whole school has really got behind this ice cream challenge.”

In total 13 pupils with a sweet tooth presented three different products before Crawshaw were selected as the winners.

Cockburn pupils pitched a popcorn and butterscotch mix, while Ralph Thorseby students offered up chocolate pretzel flavoured ice cream.

Each school was given £50 worth of vouchers by Asda to buy ingredients and materials to get their creamy creations ready.

Lucy Hurrell-Morgan, from Asda’s technical governance team, said: “This is an exciting project for the pupils.

“Not only do they get to do something fun and educational but they also have the opportunity to be invited to R&R Ice Cream’s production plant to see their idea come to life.”

The competition, organised by Asda, R&R Ice Cream and Ahead Partnership, aimed to open students’ eyes to the possibilities of working in the food and retail industries.

Louise Bamber, Asda’s product development manager for ice cream, said: “Now the challenge is back on us to get this produced and on the shelves.”

Asda’s Loaded ice cream range features seven flavours including midnight cookie feast, peanut butter crunch and strawberry cheesecake.
