organisations that offer a lifeline to vulnerable people in Leeds throughout the winter months are being given the chance to scoop a share of a £75,000 cash giveaway.
Community groups can apply for grants of up to £2,500 from Leeds Community Foundation (LCF) to help the elderly and others at risk from the effects of cold weather.
The giveaway is part of the Surviving Winter campaign, backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
LCF wants to hear from groups who have devised innovative ways to spend the money. Previous schemes have ranged from delivering warm meals to vulnerable households; helping people to get to medical appointments in bad adverse weather; “buddying” schemes between local residents to help others during severe weather; information and advice services to reduce the risk of fuel poverty; and handyman schemes that focus on energy efficiency such as improving insulation.
Sally-Anne Greenfield, chief executive of LCF, said: “We are really pleased to be working with the Yorkshire Evening Post this year to promote our winter warmth grants campaign.
“Approximately one in four households in Leeds live in fuel poverty and, each year, people die due to illnesses or accidents caused by cold weather and cold or damp living conditions.
“This grants programme will support a range of community groups across the city who are working hard to help vulnerable people over the Christmas period.”
She added: “Christmas is often a time of isolation, and even crisis, for vulnerable people and the community organisations that are likely to benefit from this grants programme provide a real lifeline.”
Last year’s Surviving Winter cash giveaway saw around 25 community groups help almost 9,000 people across the city – from the elderly to families with young children and those with mobility problems.
