Home-grown rockers Kaiser Chiefs and former Leeds United captain Dominic Matteo have pitched in to support female footballers in Leeds.

Leeds United Ladies football team, which has now been rebranded as Leeds Ladies FC, faced an uncertain future amid claims they can no longer use the Whites brand.

But supporters from across the city have clubbed together to give the team a whole new lease of life ahead of the start of their season.

Dozens of Leeds United fans, local businesses and even current Whites player Noel Hunt have sponsored the football team.

Gary Cooper, chairman of Leeds Ladies FC, said: “The response has been absolutely overwhelming.

“I know how fantastic Leeds fans are but the kind of support we have received has been unbelievable.

“It is all about pulling together and being Leeds, being loyal and proud and I cannot wait for the season to start.”

Leeds-based band Cadillac Jukebox, Leeds United fanzines and bloggers The Square Ball and local businesses have also offered to sponsor the team.

Mr Cooper said they need around £25,000 for the first year and have already raised around £6,000.

Sponsorship of a player costs around £100 and includes two free season tickets to all home league games and two tickets to the end of season awards dinner.

Mr Cooper added: “Since 1989 Leeds Ladies have played at the summit of football for many, many seasons.

“The traditions and proud history of women’s football in Leeds is absolutely second to none.

“We have to protect that history and we will be back at the summit of English football.

“This phoenix is rising.”
