Student's catwalk designs set to be museum pieces

LONDON'S Natural History Museum is better known for ancient dinosaur bones than kitsch catwalk fashion.

But now Leeds student Laura Haywood is set to inject a spot of disco fever into the famous Kensington landmark.

The former Royds School pupil has just been selected to have her cutting-edge work showcased at the museum as part of London Fashion Week.

Laura, 20, who has just finished a fashion design degree course at Doncaster College, will exhibit her 70s disco designs just yards from some of the most famous antiquities in the world.

Catwalk models will also parade her work as part of the event.

Laura, of Woodlesford, Leeds, said: "The biggest I had done before this was the college fashion show.

"I'm really excited, but I'm also quite nervous as well. I don't really know what to expect. I went to the museum once when I was still at school, and it was a really magical place.

"It had a real aura and was steeped in history. I'm really thrilled to think of my work being shown in one of the most famous museums in the world, but I'm nervous in case people don't like it."

History

Although her creations are modern – she made them this year – they still have an element of history to them.

She loves the 1970s and has tried to give her work a flavour of that era.

Laura is now looking for a job after passing her degree with first-class honours. She is considering studying for a teaching qualification, but says her dream would be to be a fashion designer.
