Strippers steeled to make spectacle of themselves

LEEDS optician and part-time theatre director Royston Bayfield has persuaded cast members of his latest stage production to proudly don a pair of glasses – and not much else.

His new production of The Full Monty – based on the world-conquering movie about stripping Sheffield steelworkers – will be on at Yeadon Town Hall from February 19 to 23.

As director, he says his biggest challenge has been getting his six male leads ready to strip on stage every night in front of 500 people.

"Getting down to bare essentials hasn't been easy. The rehearsals have been intense as we've only had six weeks before the curtain goes up – and clothes come off.

"Luckily we have some of the best performers in the area. It will be a great night out."

Royston – who owns two practices in Leeds with business partner Louise Bartlam – says he is so passionate about eye-wear that he's running a campaign encouraging people to take pride in wearing their specs.

"We want to make visiting the opticians more interesting and less of a chore. And our mission is to encourage people to be 'out and proud' about wearing spectacles."
