A high-speed crash involving a stolen Jaguar brought traffic chaos to part of Leeds.

The crash happened in Belle Isle Road in Belle Isle in south Leeds at 6.05am yesterday. (February 14)

The Jaguar XJ Sport car was travelling away from Town Street when it went out of control and hit a parked Vauxhall Corsa and a Fiat Doble van. It narrowly missed a lamp-post.

The 31-year-old male driver was seriously injured and trapped in the wreckage of the vehicle.

A police spokesperson said the driver of the Jaguar was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where his condition is described as serious.

Firefighters from Hunslet and Rothwell were called to free him and had to wrench the off-side doors from the Jaguar.

One of the Hunslet firefighters said: “The damage was all on the driver’s side. The driver’s seat had been squashed to half its normal width. The driver was trapped by the feet. He was just conscious. He had injuries to his ankles, legs and upper body. Paramedics were anxious that we got him out as quickly as possible.”

He said if the car had not hit the van it would very likely have crashed through a front room window.

“It ended up on the pavement,” he said.

The Jaguar had been stolen from outside a house in Lockwood Way, which is just a few hundred yards from the scene of the crash.

Belle Isle Road, which is a major thoroughfare, was still closed more than an hour after the crash.

It was initially thought that another person may have made off from the scene, and the West Yorkshire police helicopter was mobilised to carry out a search.

A 17-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and is in police custody.

Witnesses should call DS Andy Greatorex of Holbeck CID on 101.
