A charity shop in Leeds has helped raise £50,000 for a homeless shelter in just one year.

The hugely successful St George’s Crypt Charity Shop in Armley is celebrating its first birthday this week.

A short ceremony was held at the store on Armley Town Street yesterday to mark the occasion.

Father Ian Wright of St Bartholomew’s Church was chosen by Crypt staff to blow out the candle on the birthday cake.

He said: “We are delighted the Crypt’s shop has so quickly become such a significant part of our local community.

“It is such a pleasure to be working with the Crypt not only through the shop but also in relation to food which we distribute to families and individuals in need.”

Customers were invited to join the celebrations.

Store manager Christine Lane, said: “It has been a wonderful year. We have made so many friends in the community and we are looking forward to building on these excellent relationships with the people of Armley in the months and years to come.”

Fundraising and PR director Martin Patterson, said: “We work very closely with the community in Armley and especially with father Ian in providing food for local people really struggling to make ends meet.”

A local Leeds Building Society manager, Sheila Bailey, also attended the event to donate £1,320 to the cause. The money was raised through the Charitable Incentive Donation from the mutual’s AGM.

Sheila said: “It was a great opportunity to visit the shop and the donation has gone towards new furniture and equipment.

“We were also very pleased to join in the first anniversary celebrations and delighted to hear it has been such a great success over the last 12 months.”
