Famous sporting names are ready to make this year’s Leeds Christmas lights switch-on party a real top-of-the-league occasion.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson and first-team stars Jonny Howson and Adam Clayton will be among the guests at Thursday night’s free event, organisers revealed today.

They will be joined on stage by Leeds Rhinos coach Brian McDermott and a number of his players, including Ian Kirke and Chris Clarkson.

Brian and co will arrive with the Super League trophy, which Rhinos won last month with their thrilling Grand Final victory over St Helens.

Other guests at the bash include armed forces singing group The Soldiers and Glee tribute act The Gleeks plus Denise Nolan and Jez Edwards, who will be appearing in the Beauty and the Beast panto at Leeds’s Carriageworks theatre over Christmas.

X Factor winner Matt Cardle’s place at the top of the evening’s bill was announced last month.

The switch-on celebrations are being organised by Leeds City Council and Real Radio, with support from the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Entertainment will get under way at 6.45pm in Victoria Gardens on the Headrow.

Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure, Coun Adam Ogilvie, said today: “This year’s lights switch-on should be a really fun event with a wide variety of guests appearing and performing on stage and we are sure the people of Leeds will give Matt Cardle a fantastic welcome.

“The show is sure to get everyone into the Christmas spirit so we look forward to seeing lots of families and thousands of people enjoying the festivities on Victoria Gardens.”

Around 15,000 revellers are expected to flock to the party, which will conclude with a fireworks display.
