Sport Relief 2012: Comic duo warm up for Leeds charity mile

A television double act are warming up for the upcoming Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile in Leeds.

Dick and Dom, who starred in CBBC’s Dick and Dom in da Bungalow for five series, will be taking to the city’s streets for the event on March 25.

Having turned on Leeds’s Christmas lights in 2007, the children’s TV duo are returning and urging locals to sign up.

Dom told the YEP: “Initially you think of how much amazing work they do on international things in places like Africa but it really helps all of the UK.

“If Dick and Dom can do it then so can you and don’t be put off by the fact that it is a race – it is a really, really good event.

“You can either jeer us or cheer us, it is a good opportunity to come down and have a great laugh.”

The funnymen will run one of the six mile events on the day, while there are also three mile and single mile races from 8.30am.

Kicking off in Millennium Square, the route runs through the heart of Leeds, taking in landmarks the Henry Moore Gallery and Victoria Gardens.

Dick said: “It kind of reminds you of the events of the 80s – a really good community, family experience and it also brings towns together.”

He said that they both have their Sport Relief shirts, bought directly from Sports Direct, with their names printed on the backs.

The Leeds event, which aids organisations like the Getaway Girls, in Harehills, that helps vulnerable young women, is one of 17 to take place nationwide.

It costs £6 for adults and £3 for children to enter and runners are urged to gain local sponsorship.

The YEP has also teamed up with Comic Relief and the Community Foundation for Leeds to offer cash-strapped groups the opportunity to apply for a share of the £100,000 Sport Relief Community Cash Grant before March 9.

Grants of between £500 and £1,000 are available to locally-run groups working in deprived areas of Leeds, which have a turnover of less than £100,000.

Dick added: “If they have got the right project that sounds like it can help people out with the help of Leeds people running the mile, even better.”
