Spice winterguard group win national competition

FLAG DAY: Olivia Bennett performing.

FLAG DAY: Olivia Bennett performing.

A dance and flag-waving troupe won first prize with a colourful performance in a national competition.

The Spice winterguard group, which has members aged nine to 13 from Horbury and Ossett, showed off their moves at the South West Regional Championships in Bristol.

They sealed first place in the junior category with a performance called A Life in Letters.

The group use a variety of hand-held objects in their routines of drama and dance, including wooden rifles and colourful flags.

Brian Hitchcock, of the Spice management committee, said the idea of their show was to use three different colours to tell a story.

He added: “Our young people gave an outstanding performance to win first place in their class, so we are very pleased.”
