A prolific burglar who targeted eight Leeds homes in a four-hour crime spree has been jailed.

Craig Sharp tried to break into seven homes in the Farnley area in the early hours of Sunday, January 20.

The 26-year-old was eventually successful in breaking into a house in Butt Lane where a BMW estate was stolen from the driveway after the keys were taken from the house.

Sharp, of Aberdeen Walk, Armley, was arrested after being identified by officers from CCTV at one of the properties.

He was jailed for four years at Leeds Crown Court.

Sharp had pleading guilty to the offences, which occurred in Butt Lane, Wood Grove, Greenmoor Avenue, Hare Farm Close and Water Lane.

In each of the attempted burglaries Sharp was either disturbed trying to break in or was unable to snap the door lock.

Sharp has numerous criminal convctions dating back to his childhood, many of which are for burglary.

He was on licence at the time of the offences having been released from a previous 40-month sentence for burglary.

Det Insp John Dexter deals with burglars in North West Leeds Division of the city.

He said: “To commit such a high number of burglaries in the space of just a few hours shows just how damaging prolific criminals like Sharp can be to our local communities.

“We hope the fact that he has now received a lengthy jail sentence will serve as some source of reassurance to the people affected by his crimes and the wider community.

“Burglary remains the top priority for the police and our partner agencies in Leeds.

“The courts are supporting these efforts by giving burglars like Sharp increased sentences.

“I hope this will serve as a warning to other burglars who think they can commit offences without having to face serious consequences.”
