Souvenir to savour of Le Tour de Yorkshire

Waiting for Video...

A Tour de France to remember is on our doorstep.

And as we approach the 100-days-to-go point, we are marking Le Tour rolling into town for the first time in its 101-year history.

After 40 hours of preparation, pencil and ink drawing, and painting, Yorkshire Post Newspapers (YPN) graphic artist and illustrator Graeme Bandeira has produced a unique collectable Yorkshire tea towel, which is available to our readers as a memento.

His detailed artwork celebrates the visit of the Tour de France by depicting the 190km route of stage one of the Grand Depart from Leeds to Harrogate, which will ride from The Headrow on July 5.

The 39-year-old, who is already hard at work drawing stage two from York to Sheffield, has reproduced Yorkshire landmarks including Leeds Town Hall, Harewood House and Aysgarth Falls in his first work.

He said: “I’ve tried to cover a broad range of things over the two projects, it’s not just castles and rolling hills but quirky things like Sid’s Cafe from Last of the Summer Wine, waterfalls, sheep and pubs that people are familiar with. You could do 10 maps and you still couldn’t get all the detail in – Yorkshire is just full of amazing sights.”

Having worked for YPN since 1998, Graeme has contributed hundreds of caricatures, logos, infographics and illustrations to the region’s newspapers, but nothing on this scale.

Hours of research studying the county’s countless landmarks and painstakingly depicting them by hand has gone into a high quality print.

He said: “I think it’s great that we’re producing a tea towel. There’s the link with tea in Yorkshire and it’s a user friendly item. I do think it’s something Yorkshire folk will appreciate.

“It’s a nice memento that you can keep of an event that will probably never happen again in the area.”

Graeme is well on with his detailed depiction of the stage two route, which includes the likes of Castle Hill, York Minster and Knaresborough Viaduct on its journey from York to Sheffield.

Our souvenir for stage one costs £5.99 plus £2.50 postage and packaging, or you can order both the stage one and two tea towels together for £10 plus £2.50 postage and packaging.

Readers can also collect in-paper tokens to buy tea towels at discounted rates.
