South Leeds: ‘United we stand’ as campaigners join up

HOUSING BATTLE: The campaigners against the Daisy Hill scheme in Morley.

HOUSING BATTLE: The campaigners against the Daisy Hill scheme in Morley.

A public meeting has been called with the aim of uniting people fighting ‘inappropriate’ developments across the Morley area.

Different groups of residents are currently battling proposed housing schemes across the town – as well as new housing targets set out in the new Local Development Framework (LDF) for Leeds.

Schemes presently being considered include a 200-home estate off Bruntcliffe Road and 90 new properties near Daisy Hill.

In addition, Leeds City Council announced last week that the LDF included long-term plans to create more than 7,000 new homes in the Dewsbury Road and East Ardsley areas.

Christine Guy, a Bruntcliffe Road resident who has fought developments in the past, is now urging groups fighting separate planning battles in Morley and Churwell to unite to try to find a way to fight developers together.

Mrs Guy said: “These developments will affect everybody and everything and so we hope a lot of people will come to this meeting, that we’ll get a good cross section of the community and that they will bring lots of ideas of how we can try to stop these developments.”

The meeting, organised by local councillors, will be held at Morley Town Hall on Wednesday, February 29, from 7pm.

Coun Judith Elliott (Morley Borough Independent, Morley South) said: “We have listened to residents who have asked us to bring them together to oppose these proposals.

“There is a large scale attack on Morley and East Ardsley greenfield sites.”

Coun Robert Finnigan (MBI, Morley North) added: “We believe Morley is full and cannot accept this level of development. Local roads are congested and local schools and health centres are full.

“We accept some development needs to happen but this needs to be focused on brownfield land and we need affordable homes for local families.”

Coun Finnigan will chair the meeting while Coun Tom Leadley will deliver a presentation of the Leeds LDF proposals.
