South Leeds: Les Miserables comes to Morley Academy
Morley Academy's production of Les Miserables.
These young stars wouldn’t look out of place on stage at London’s West End.
The talented youngsters are set to tread the boards in their biggest production at Morley Academy.
More than 100 pupils have been rehearsing for their roles in musical Les Miserables since September.
Around 900 people are expected to see two-hour spectacular and tickets are already selling out.
Ben Lancaster, 16, who has the lead role of Jean Valjean, said: “I feel proud to have such a big role in a big production and I want to do it justice. It’s quite a big challenge for a school to put on a show of this size because it’s almost verging on an opera.”
Kira Street, 18, who plays Fontaine, said: “I hadn’t heard of it before but now I can’t stop watching it on DVD and singing the songs.
“Learning the music from the scores has been the hardest part.”
Lorraine Miller, head of drama and performance, said: “We always try to do something challenging because we’ve got some really talented students and we know that the kids can do it.
“This year is the 25th anniversary of Les Miserables so we thought it would be fitting.
“I can’t wait for the performances, it’s probably the biggest and most challenging production we’ve had.
“It’s something that the kids will remember in years to come.”
Megan Wilson, 13, who plays Gavroche, said: “It’s my favourite musical. I’ve found it hard because there are loads of lines but we’ve all really enjoyed it.”
Tickets for the show, which runs from tomorrow until Friday, February 10, cost between £5 and £7.
