South Leeds: Developers to the defence of plan for 90 new homes
Developers facing mounting opposition to their plans to build almost 90 new homes in Morley have moved to defend their scheme.
Persimmon Homes wants to create a new estate of three and four-bed homes on a plot of vacant land at Daisy Hill.
However, the proposed development has attracted criticism from local residents who are concerned about drainage and water run-off from the new estate, poor bus services and narrow roads on the apoproach to the site.
Last week the YEP reported that a new objection had also been raised by the family of tragic teenager Natasha Elliott, the 16-year-old Morley schoolgirl who killed as she tried to lure her pet dog off the main train line through the town.
Her grandfather Tony Elliott said he was worried the proposed new homes were too close to the tracks and feared that children living in the new properties could be tempted to go near the railway.
In addition, a long-established business owner Bob Harder, whose company makes sausage casings, is concerned the planned homes are too close to the perimeter of his industrial site. He said he was worried that once residents moved in they might complain about noise and smell from his factory and he could face planning restrictions – even though his plant was there before the new homes.
Morley Town Council has recorded an official objection to the plans, though any final decision will ultimately be made by Leeds City Council.
In its defence, Permisson says the site in question has been allocated for housing for a number of years and plans to go ahead with submitting a formal planning application to the city council.
Neil Williams, land director at Persimmon Homes West Yorkshire, said: “The site at Daisy Hill in Morley has been allocated for housing for a number of years and is recognised by the Leeds Unitary Development Plan, which was adopted in 2000 and reviewed again in 2006.
“The principle of residential development has therefore already been accepted and has been long established.
“Persimmon Homes has been made aware of some general and specific concerns from local residents and businesses relating to this location and we expect these to be fully considered during the planning application process, which is on-going.
“We are currently working closely with the relevant departments at Leeds City Council as we work towards a final scheme design, which we expect to present to the members of the Plans Panel in due course.”
