South Leeds Community Radio takes to the airwaves

The sound of south Leeds will soon be broadcast 24 hours a day after councillors granted a community radio station £12,000 to take to the airwaves.

South Leeds Community Radio, which transmits from the Hillside Centre In Beeston, currently only broadcasts over the internet.

The cash provided by the council's inner south area committee will allow the station to broadcast over an fm radio frequency – 87.9 – for three weeks starting on November 21.

At least 50 volunteers will be recruited so that speech, public information and music programmes can be produced by, with and for local people.

Councillor David Congreve (Lab, Beeston) said he is pleased that a range of community groups in the neighbourhoods, including South Leeds Academy and St Lukes Cares teenage pregnancy group, are taking part in the project.

He said: "People in Beeston and Holbeck, City and Hunslet and Middleton Park wards will soon be enjoying South Leeds Community Radio. It is a very exciting project and I am delighted that the area committee approved this funding.

"It will be terrific to hear south Leeds's residents hitting the airwaves and producing shows with a strong community focus.

"Community groups from right across the south of the city will be involved in the project and at least 50 local volunteers will be recruited. South Leeds has lots of great things to shout about and a lot of talent."

Judith Weymant, station manager said: "Everyone involved at South Leeds Community Radio is really pleased for the generous funding from the council.

"The first broadcast of our third stint on the airwaves will be aired on 87.9 fm at 6pm on November 21 and daily broadcasts will continue until December 12."
