A Leeds charity which was in danger of closing has been given a glimmer of hope by fundraisers at a golf club.
As reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post in December, the future of SNAPS (Special Needs and Parent Support) is at risk unless it finds £10,000 by March.
The Leeds-based charity provides over 450 families of disabled youngsters with specialist hydrotherapy, swimming, dance classes and arts and crafts
Now, after hearing about the charity’s struggle, a golf and fitness club has pledged to fundraise throughout January.
Cookridge Golf Club in Leeds has vowed to raise cash through donations from golf lessons it is providing at a special price this month.
Gary Day, the golf club’s general manager, said: “Fingers crossed our efforts shall see a fruitful gain for the charity.
“We shall look forward to presenting SNAPS with a belated Christmas present.”
SNAPS provides much-needed activities for children with a range of disabilities through its fortnightly Saturday morning sessions at Pennyfields School in Meanwood, Leeds.
The Leeds-based charity was started in 2004 by parents of children with special needs and since then has grown, being the city’s only provider of non-NHS hydrotherapy sessions – for which there can be a long wait through the health service.
Each session costs almost £1,000 to run, but grants have become more difficult to obtain and donations have reduced, leaving the charity struggling to continue.
Julie Bailey, whose seven-year-old daughter Georgia has been attending since she was two, previously told the YEP it would be “devastating” if the service wasn’t available.
But after hearing about the charity’s plight, the golf club offered to help.
Previously it has raised £40,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, as well as supported the Make a Wish Foundation and the high dependency surgical ward at Leeds General Infirmary.
Now professionals at the club are offering lessons in January at half price at a cost of £25, with £5 from each one-hour lesson being donated to SNAPS.
Head teaching professional Mark Pinkett said: “Our facilities allow golfers to practice and try their hand at every aspect of the game, it gives us great pleasure to be able to provide these opportunities and raise valuable funds for SNAPS at the same time.”
