The images were taken at the West Indian Centre and the Leeds Carnival in Chapeltown, capturing the spirit and characters which come alive in this part of Leeds at night.

And while some would shy away from parts of inner-city Leeds after dark, the photographers behind the project – Victor De Jesus and Rachel Codling – were keen to show a positive picture of local young people.

Mr De Jesus said: "I wanted to get past the bad press youth culture so often gets, to reveal the vibrancy which makes Chapeltown such a unique place. We had a really positive experience. We have tried to do justice to the fantastic array of personalities we encountered."

Ms Colding said: "We have tried to create street portraits which capture the true essence of young people – their fashions, their interests, their ideas and aspirations. There was a really strong sense of style and identity with those that we met, and we aimed to communicate this."

The exhibition officially launches at 6pm today, and runs for five weeks until November 1 at the Reliance, North Street, Leeds city centre.

Victor De Jesus is a photographer who has been based in Leeds for the last 10 years.

Rachel Codling graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University in 2005 with a degree in Graphic Arts and Design. Her time is now divided between working on projects in Leeds, London and Norfolk.
