Slideshow: Calverley schoolchildren sow seed of hope for woodland future
Pupils at a Calverley primary scchool have been helping sow the seeds for future generations.
Youngsters from Calverley CofE Primary School took part in a seed gathering workshop in Calverley Wood.
Altogether 21 primary schools have been taking part in seven tree seed gathering workshops held in woodlands throughout the city, including Chevin Forest Park, Temple Newsam Woods & Middleton Woods.
This year over 600 children have been involved in the collection of seed, which is then used to grow seedlings in preparation for planting back in the local landscape.
Currently 10,000 young trees are ready to be planted following previous seed collection activities. Each child takes away their own planted seed which they raise and nurture in school or at home.
The event is organised by Leeds City Council's Parks and Countryside service and officers from the service take away thousands of acorns, sweet chestnuts and beech nuts to plant and provide a new generation of trees.
